The CHEERS consortium

The beer company Mahou San Miguel is project coordinator and exploitation leader jointly with 12 partners of 5 European countries, including technology suppliers, end-users and research entities.

CHEERS integrates the expertise of 12 European partners with complementary backgrounds, scientific and technical knowledge, and skills, to fullfil the overall objective of the project.

Indeed, most of them exhibit a relevant position in the bioeconomy sector as leaders in their fields. Most partners have previous experience in hosting integrated demo sites, exploiting R&D results, contributing with results to the development of the bioeconomy, supporting dissemination and communication activities, and assessing social, environmental and biodiversity impacts.

Project Coordinator

The Mahou San Miguel brewing company is coordinator and operational leader of the European CHEERS project.

Mahou San Miguel is a family beverage company, 100% Spanish and leader in the beer sector in our country. It has 10 brewing centers –eight in Spain and two in the US–, four water springs and a team of nearly 4,000 professionals. It produces more than 70% of the Spanish beer that is consumed outside of Spain and is present in more than 70 countries.

Aqualia is the water management company owned by FCC (51%) and the Australian fund IFM Investors (49%). It is the fourth water company in Europe by population served and is among the top ten in the World. Aqualia covers the whole water cycle, managing water and wastewater services for more than 25 million people in 17 countries.

Aqualia will coordinate the design, construction and implementation of the demo microbial platforms and will oversee the operation the demo BES reactor for Cl2-based disinfectant production and will coordinate with MAHOU the validation of the disinfectant product.

HIDROTEC Tecnología del agua is a subsidiary of Aqualia. Aqualia owns 100% of HIDROTEC. Its main activities are the design, construction, exploitation, conservation and maintenance of water treatment machinery and water engineering processes.

HIDROTEC will be in charge of the design and construction of the biogas upgrading unit for CO2-enrichment in the BES and the DSP of output stream of biomethane to reach > 85% methane content.

UVA’s Institute of Sustainable Processes has more than 20 years of experience in biological gas treatment and development of biogas valorization biotechnologies.

UVA will upscale and optimize the biogas bioconversion into a ectoine-containing biomass in a novel gas-phase biofermentor at demo scale (WP3) and support Genia Bioenergy along the DSP of ectoine.

PROTEINSECTA is a Spanish insect processing company founded in 2018. It has a farm and processing plant and lab in Spain. PROTE has the largest living-lab net with more than 7 farms in several insect species (Tenebrio Molitor, Hermetia illucens, and Alphitobius Diaperinus) for food and feed in Europe.

Proteinsecta will be in charge of the design of the demo unit for the insect platform and will lead the bioconversion of bagasse to insects (WP2). Proteinsecta will participate in the DSP of insect protein (WP4) and  characterization and validation of the drinks enriched with this ingredient (WP5).

Innovarum is a technical consultancy providing support to innovative projects on the agri-food sector and bioeconomy. Innovarum has solid experience in reaching target audiences via professional D&C campaigns and developing and implementing Open Science plans, to facilitate knowledge exchange and co-creation.

Innovarum will support communication and dissemination actions to ensure the project reaches the bio-based sector and creates a long-lasting impact (WP7). In addition Innovarum will develop Open Science plan and monitor the implementation of the OS practices.

Symrise AG is a global supplier of fragrances, flavors, food, nutrition and cosmetic ingredients. Clients include manufacturers of perfumes, cosmetics, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and producers of nutritional supplements/petfood.

Symrise, as international leader of cosmetic and food/feed ingredients, will coordinate WP5, focused on product validation. Specifically, they will be in charge of the in vitro and in vivo cosmetic ingredient validation.

Genia Bioenergy is an SME with a large expertise in international consulting, development and implementation projects in the fields of bioenergy, organic waste treatment and bioproduct DSP.

Genia Bioenergy as technology provider, will be in charge of the design and construction of the upstream – and DSP units for the CO2-based caproic acid production and the DSP unit for ectoine purification at demo-scale (WP3,4).

SYSPRO Automation is an automation and process engineering company with >50 engineers and expertise on bioprocesses upscale, development of P&IDs, instrumentation and control system engineering.

SYSPRO Automation as technology provider, will be in charge of the design and construction of the highmass
transfer biofermentors required for biomass production from CH4 (WP3).

AINIA is a private non-profit agri-food tecnological centre with one of the largest business social bases in Europe. It has with over 220 employees with expertise on biotechnology, waste/wastewater treatment, environmental engineering and food/feed product validation.

AINIA will provide its know-how on i) gas fermentation technologies in the microbial platform (CO2 and CH4 bioconversion to caproic acid and SCP) (WP3) and food/feed product validation (WP5).

Thunder Foods is a portuguese insect protein processing company founded in april 2021 seek to develop sustainable and disruptive food products. The founders of the company started their R&D work on Tenebrio Molitor in 2011.

It has a farm and processing R&D plant in Portugal and its current focus is on the industrialization of the protein production process.

Thunder Foods will be in charge of the design of the DSP of insect protein (WP4) and characterization and validation of the drinks enriched with this ingredient (WP5).

The Zurich University of Applied Sciences is one of the leading Swiss universities of applied sciences. It is based in Zurich, Winterthur and Wädenswil. Based in Wädenswil, the School of Life sciences and facility Management has more than 600 employees and around 1,800 students that are currently enrolled. Seven Bachelor’s and four Master’s degree programmes, together with a wide range of continuing education courses are offered.

ZHAW will be in charge of quantifying the environmental impact of the five new, innovative products and compare them with conventional production systems.

Earthwatch is an IRO (independent research organisation) and we use science to better understand the environmental challenges we face, and to find solutions to these issues. They are leaders in – and passionate advocates of – citizen science: engaging the public in research. They empower people from all walks of life to gather data, generate environmental insights and inform future policy.

Earthwatch’s main roles in CHEERS are: 1. To engage with bio-based industries – through a comprehensive engagement approach bio-based industries and SMEs will be integrated into the CHEERS approach to encourage uptake of CHEERS innovations; and 2. to facilitate the co-design of solutions for addressing and monitoring the environmental impacts of CHEERS methodologies. An iterative process will be used to help enhance existing bio-based industry activities in CHEERS products, involving all stakeholders, and resulting in a list of requirements for each CHEERS product regarding expectations and the impact of each solution.
