SYSPRO AUTOMATION is taking part in the EU-funded Horizon Europe project CHEERS, and it’s in charge of the design and construction of the highmass transfer biofermentors required for biomass production from CH4 (WP3). Throughout these months, SYSPRO AUTOMATION engineers have generated all the necessary information (based on laboratory data from the participating partners) to be able to start the process of purchasing materials and manufacturing the plant. Among the documents generated, which provide the necessary information are the following:

  • Process design basis
  • Process Flow diagram
  • Process description
  • Equipment process datasheet
  • P&ID
  • Electrical diagrams
  • Mechanical manufacturing drawings
  • PLC programming

The process has been carefully planned, with all necessary components and instrumentation defined to ensure full control. The team specified the exact types and measurement ranges of instruments required, including pressure transmitters, flow meters, temperature sensors, pH transmitters, level detectors, and methane sensors, all of which are housed at Syspro’s facilities. Both manual and automatic valves were selected based on the process requirements, along with the proper sizing of pumps, prioritizing those for mixture circulation.

In depth engineering

Mechanically, the detailed engineering drawings for the gas mixing tank, Taylor tank, and U-loop system were completed, along with the design of a piping layout to facilitate smooth circulation between pumps and other system components. From an electrical standpoint, comprehensive wiring diagrams were developed, and key equipment such as the electrical cabinet, inverters, and PLCs were procured. The PLC programming will allow for real-time monitoring and control of process variables, with the flexibility to adjust through the HMI interface. Prior to purchasing, the team thoroughly evaluated supplier offers, comparing costs, delivery times, and material quality, leading to orders being placed with the most suitable vendors.

The project partners had the opportunity to see in person these advancements during the past General Assembly of the project on SYSPRO’s facilities. If you want to learn more about the event, check this post!
